Yes, Delicious Turkey Meatloaf

Forget what you thought about turkey meatloaf. The hint of BBQ sauce, sauteed garlic and onions takes this turkey meatloaf to a whole new level! A few years ago if you would have told me that turkey meatloaf could be delicious there was absolutely no way I would believe you. I'd tried several recipes for turkey meatloaf and they were all bland, too dry or too mushy, and just weird tasting. Well I was doing my internship at a doctors office in 2005 and my coworkers were talking about the most delicious turkey meatloaf they'd ever tasted. It was brought in by an old lady who provides all kinda lunches and baked goods for the office because she liked the doctor so much. Now any kind of talk about an outstanding recipe always gets my antennas going. After about a month I was finally able to track down the lady and ask about this recipe. She said she'd got the recipe from an old Taste of Home magazine. She was tight-lipped about any details though. I immediately went online and started my digging. I eventually found 10 turkey meatloaf recipes from Taste of Home. So what was a girl to do?....Yep I made all ten of those bad boys! Nothing gets in the way of my good recipe addiction. Out of all 10 I knew when I had found the jewel! This turkey meatloaf is moist and bursting with flavor. Pair this up with some whipped potatoes and some green bean..manifico!!

Yes, Delicious Turkey Meatloaf

Ingredients

2 Tablespoons of butter
1/2 onion (chopped, about 1 cup)
1-1/2 t. minced garlic (fresh tastes the best in this recipe)
1 lb of ground turkey
1/2 cup of dried bread crumbs
1 egg
1/4 cup of BBQ sauce plus more to spread on top if desired
1/4 cup of Ketchup plus more to spread on top if desired
2 t. Worcestershire
3/4 t. salt
1/2 t. Black pepper

First preheat oven to 350

Step 1.) Chop up half an onion

Step 2.) Melt 2 T. of butter in a saucepan

Step 3.) Add 1-1/2 t. minced garlic and onions to the saucepan and cook for 5-7 minutes until onions are tender.

Step 4.) Pour the mixture into a large bowl and let cool for about 10 minutes.

Step5.) To the bowl add:

1 lb of ground turkey

1/2 c. of bread crumbs
1egg

1/4 c. ketchup
(I'm using more in this photo because I'm making this for a ketchup loving freak)

1/4 c. BBQ sauce

2 t. Worcestershire sauce

3/4 t. salt

1/2t. black pepper

Step 5.) Mix all of this up until well combined. I like to use my hands so that it really gets combined good.

Step 6.) Press into a 8x4 inch loaf pan. You can spread on more ketchup/ BBQ sauce if desired. I always put on a thin layer of ketchup and then put on the BBQ sauce when it comes out.

Step 7.) Bake for 50-55 minutes. When done let sit for 15 to 20 minutes. You can drain off the juices if needed but don't cut into it until it has cooled down. The meat needs time to relax and firm up.

ENJOY!!!!

  5. Made this last night with 1/3 lean beef and turkey...my beef loving boys ate it up! (they usually turn away from 'ground turkey' too healthy) It was an awesome recipe....thanks for posting. Mac and cheese tonight!

  8. ok I made this today. I'm just learning to cook. The flavor was very good but the loaf was mushy. Maybe I will have luck with the chicken chilli next week. I used a large egg if that made a difference and I didn't use the really lean ground turkey. any tips? I let it sit for like 20 min too

  9. Hmmmm....let's see here. Did you use dried bread crumbs? Fresh bread is too moist which will make the meatloaf soggy-like. The large egg shouldn't have been a problem if you used dried bread crumbs.

Let me know..I hate when things don't work out.

  10. I use the dried bread crumbs. I will try again in the future. What brand of turkey meat did you use?

  11. Hello Monique,

I love your Turkey Meatloaf dish. I have a different version you should try. I use shredded onions, cooked spinach chopped, shredded carrots, minced garlic, fresh minced mushrooms and season salt to taste. I found out that no bread crumbs were needed due to the minced onions. It makes it moist. Then I top it off with Jack Daniels BBQ Sauce. Sorry I dont have the direct measurements for each item I usually have it all in my head. Keep up the good work. PS they can also be turned into delicious BBQ Meatballs. I made some for Thanksgiving and my fam went crazy. I just baked them in the oven. so good.

  19. I used ground beef and tried it tonight. Not going to lie I added extra worchestire & bbq sauce, I liked it but my husband said it was too sweet for him. I also cooked it longer since after 55 minutes & letting it sit for 20, it was still mushy & uncooked. But I put it back in the oven for 30-40 minutes and it came out good! I will be eating it this week for lunch w/mashed potatoes; unfortunately since he doesn't like it I will have to cook something else tomorrow!

  20. Hey girl! I made this about 2 months ago and the flavor was awesome but it was falling apart when the time came to serve it. I used 2 lbs of ground beef instead of turkey. Not sure what happened but I am making it again tonight and I plan to put just a little less bbq sauce and ketchup to see if that makes a difference in the texture. Definitely a great recipe though!

  21. This is my fourth time making this meatloaf. My family loves it! For all those having trouble keeping the meatloaf together try using a different pan. For some reason when I use glass loaf pans this meatloaf will not hold together at all. I now use a ceramic or tin loaf pan and it comes out moist and firm with the same texture as beef meatloaf!!!

  22. Just came back to say that the second time my meatloaf held together and it was good! I used 1/8 cup BBQ sauce & ketchup instead of 1/4 cup.
@ Anonymous - thanks for the tip about glass pans because that's what I used.
Anyhoo, this is my go-to recipe for meatloaf. BTW, I make a glaze to go on top that's really good. 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/4 cup light brown sugar, and 4 tsp apple cider vinegar mixed together. Give it a try!

  24. this meatloaf had a really good flavor to it! unfortunately, i had the same problem as some of the other reviewers--and i think i know why. it didn't stay together at all. it fell apart before i could get it on the dinner plate. however, i think it's because i used regular hamburger instead of turkey burger (with a fat content of 20%). this HAD to be the problem because i followed everything else to the T. (FYI: i used a foil loaf pan.)

but like i said, this was very good and i'm sure i would have had a better outcome if i would have used turkey burger.

with that said, i have to tell you that i have THE BEST meatloaf recipe of AAALLLLLLLL TIME! (i can't take credit for it, unfortunately. it came from Bob Evans®, with only a few minor adjustments that i made.) in your video, you mentioned that you were preparing your meatloaf for a "ketchup-loving freak" (or something like that--lol), so i think that person would REALLY like this recipe. it has a ketchup-based topping that you spoon on it right before serving that is out of this world!

try it and tell me what you and your family think. a link to my facebook page is above (just click on my name "ReneeMelissa"), or you can email me reneegriswold@gmail.com

    here it is:

  26. Just made this for dinner and it was delicious. I don't like onions, so I used Savory Herb & Garlic Lipton Soup Mix and it was sooooo good. I also mixed the BBQ sauce and Ketchup together and brushed it on top before putting it into the oven. I made this with your mac and cheese recipe (with a few alterations) and some steamed veggies.

    Keep he recipes comin
