Creamy, Decadent Banana Pudding

This is one of my favorite banana puddings to take to potlucks because it tends to please everyone from the kids to the adults, true southerners to Yorkers alike! This is the recipe my grandmother uses a lot for family get-togethers. It's quick, easy and just heavenly!  The addition of the sour cream really adds a special touch and ties all the flavors in perfectly so that it's not overly sweet or too rich like some banana puddings can be. Don't let the instant pudding throw you off if you're use to making your own pudding. This recipe taste so much better with instant pudding than with homemade pudding in my opinion. I made this dessert for a holiday party and a pilot was there and his exact words were "I've had banana pudding from all over the world but this stuff is first class!" I never seemed to forget that.  What a compliment!

Watch me make this dessert!

Creamy, Decadent Banana Pudding

Ingredients

3-6 bananas
2 boxes of instant Vanilla pudding
2 cups of milk
1 box of Nilla Wafers (You won't need the whole box, unless you just really like nilla wafers)
8 oz. container of Cool Whip
8 oz. container of sour cream

Direction

Step 1.) In a bowl, combine 2 packs of pudding and 2 cups of milk. Stir until creamy
Step 2.) Add in 8 oz of sour cream and 4 oz (half the container) of cool whip. Stir until combined.
Step 3.) In a dish, add a layer of chopped bananas and nilla wafers (don't be shy, add as much as you like!)
Step 4. ) Add a large spoonful of the pudding mixture and spread evenly over the wafer and bananas.
Step 5.) Repeat the layering process, ending with the pudding mixture.
Step 6.) Spread on the remaining Cool Whip
Step 7.) Top with Nilla Wafers
Refrigerate until well chilled & enjoy!

Just don't eat a whole freakin dish in 3 days like I did! This blog is making me fat I tell ya!

  2. Looks great! (I found you through the Under 100 Followers group at MBC.)

I always read about these Nilla wafers but have never seen them in stores. I'm guessing they're not available here in Canada. :( Have to find a substitute!

  4. Made this today for my husband as a little after-work surprise and he LOVED it! Mind you this is a true southern man who was raised on his mothers chessman cookies banana pudding. I followed the recipe exactly but added in the whole tube of cool whip instead of saving some to spread on top. This made it so fluffy. He had two bowls and then told me to start making this kind from now on! The sour cream is what does it! Thanks again for yet another 5-star recipe!

  7. I made this for my kids this past weekend and they loved it! My husband is a fitness guru and will not touch anything sweet (with the exception of once a week), not to mention he won't eat anyone's banana pudding except his mother's. I put the pudding in the fridge to chill overnight, the next morning half of it was missing! Now they are begging for me to make it this weekend!

  22. Girl!!! dont worry about what @andrea said!!! As far as im concerned my man tasted it and he said it tastes like that old lady in the church that sells homemade desserts! So you KNOW that he requested a batch for himself and his barber friends! IT WAS A HIT!!! I also made the yams and i had seconds and my daughter loved the yams as well! You make desserts that are scrumptious but simple enough for the novice and the expert cooker!!

  23. Did you use the small box of instand pudding or the bigger one?

  24. Hey can the new Philadelphia cooking Cream be substituted for the Sour cream..what do you think? how would it affect the flavor??

    ReplyDelete
  25. Mike hmmmm...I'm not sure. The cooking creme is slightly more savory than sour cream.

  26. I'm not sure why someone would say that using boxed pudding is not good. Let me tell you, as long as it is delicious, who cares? I made this on Sunday and the sour cream made it "pop." My family loved it and it didn't make it to the next day. Thanks :-)

  27. Im Sure that this is good its quick . nothing to it. I pefer the real banana pudding where the custard is cooked over the stove in a double boiler. thats real bana puddin. so you should call this quick and easy bana puddin.the real one from the south is cooked custard. Honey I come from a long line of southern cooks.
