Southern Baked Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

(it looks A LOT better in person. I promise I'm going to learn how to work my camera this week.)

Southern Soul Food Baked Macaroni and Cheese

Ok...now yall know finding a good southern soul food style baked macaroni and cheese recipe is like finding gold. No, better it's like coming across an authentic Louis Vuitton bag on ioffer.com...almost damn near impossible right? People tend to keep a tight grasp on their prized macaroni & cheese recipe so discovering a good, tried & true one can be hard.

Well imagine my shock when my sister sashayed in on Thanksgiving and casually placed this beautiful baked macaroni & cheese on the table. I could have sworn I had all of my family members baked mac n cheese recipes. What was this impostor all about! The proof was in the taste. I had one  (ok three) plates of this macaroni and cheese and was on her heels like ash in the winter time trying to get this recipe.

My husband took a bite and said "ohhhhh you need to take your mac n cheese recipe off your blog and put this one up. This one is waaay better than yours!" THANKS A LOT MATT...You'll pay for that comment dearly! lol (don't think I forgot)

Yall this baked macaroni is FULL OF SOUL!! That is the first thing that came to mind when I took that first bite. It's a true southern style macaroni & cheese. Cheesey, flavorful, easy and the star player is that SMOKED CHEDDAR! Good God I couldn't stop eating this stuff.

So big sis....I will bow down gracefully to you and say that you make THE BEST Baked MAC N CHEESE EVER! (but that doesn't mean I'm going to remove mine from this site lol)

I have printed out this recipe, took a photo of it, laminated it and put it in my recipe album. Not many recipes get to make it to the album. She's a keeper!

I'm sure that if you give it a try it will end up going into your recipe collection as well.

Watch me make this macaroni and cheese from start to finish!
Ignore the intro pic on the title page of this video, it's the one from my other mac and cheese recipe (also on my blog) so don't get confused.

Ingredients (make a 9 x 9 inch pan)
3 cups macaroni, uncooked
2 eggs
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 1/2 cups milk
salt & pepper
paprika (optional)
1 cup smoked cheddar cheese, shredded (a must)
8 oz. velvetta, shredded (feel free to cut back on the velvetta if you don't want it to be really creamy)
1 cup sharp cheddar (can use less if you don't like a sharp taste in your mac n cheese)
1 cup colby & monteray jack, shredded (cheese blend)

Preheat oven to 350

Step 1.) Cook macaroni until al dente. (Look on the back of the box to see how long you need to cook your pasta for it to reach al dente texture. Do not overcook or you will have a mushy baked mac n cheese.) When pasta is done, drain and set aside.

Step 2.) In a large bowl, add milk, heavy cream & cheeses (except for the smoked cheddar). Stir to combine.

Step 3.) Taste the milk mixture and add salt & pepper until it has a good taste. This will help avoid having a plain, bland bake macaroni & cheese. Uggh!

Step 4.) When you are content with the taste, add in the eggs. Stir well until combined.

Step 5.) Butter a 9 x 9 inch baking dish, and pour macaroni in.

Step 6.) Pour cheese mixture over macaroni & top with smoked cheddar cheese. Sprinkle with paprika and/or black pepper, if desired.

Step 7.) Bake for 35-45 minutes. Do not overbake. It may be a bit jiggly when you take it out of the oven. It will firm up as it cool.

Step 8.) Let cool for about 10-20 minutes to fully set.

  2. Question Monique....can we just mix it up in a bowl, then put it in the baking dish? I ask because some recipes are particular about the order of things. I would just want it mixed together real good is all.

  4. I noticed this recipe doesn't call for any butter as most baked macaroni recipes do. Would it hurt to add some to this recipe?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Yep no butter required in this one. I was suprised about that too. It really doesn't need any in my opinion, with the cheeses, milk & heavy cream it surely makes up for the butter but if you'd like to add some go right ahead. Let me know how it turns out!!

Figured I would share it with you and hopefully you like it.
    3 blocks Philly Cream Cheese
1 can Rotel (tomato and green pepper) drained
1 roll Jimmy Dean Sausage cooked and drained.
(melt cream cheese add drained rotel and mix)
(add sausage, I like adding a little bit of garlic powder or salt)
mix up really good *remember the cheese must be melted* and this dip must be warm
and serve with some tortilla chips. OMG Girl so yummy! I hope you like

I searched high and low and never found it...UNTIL yesterday when I was in Target and found it in the "smoked" food section. FIGURES! lol Anyway...thanks again. I'll be using this again and again!!!!

  17. Hi! I decided to incorporate some ideas from both of the mac and cheese recipes on here, mainly because your sister's calls for eggs but yours does not, and I prefer the consistency of egg-less baked mac and cheese. So here's what I did:

*3 cups macaroni (I measured out 3/4 cups of chicken broth and used what was left over to add to the water to cook the noodles).
    *3 tbsp butter
    *3 tbsp flour
    *3/4 cups evaporated milk
    *3/4 cups chicken broth
*1 cup smoked gouda (I wanted to use the smoked cheddar but could not find it at the market)
    *1 cup sharp white cheddar
    *1 cup cheddar jack
    *1 cup velveeta

I melted the butter, then added flour, evap milk and chicken broth, and mixed until smooth.

I then added all the cheeses and let them melt slowly, stirring frequently. Next time I do this, I will add the gouda first and let that melt for about 10 min. before adding the other cheeses. Gouda takes a little longer to melt.

I added about 2 tbsp sour cream and some pepper to the drained macaroni.

I added the cheese mix to the noodles, but noticed it was not very loose at all. So I ended up adding about another cup of skim milk to it, which did the trick.

I greased the bottom of my baking pan and poured the mix in.

I then took about 1/4 cup of each of the cheeses, mixed them together, and sprinkled that on top.

I baked it for about 25 minutes, then let it sit for about 20 minutes.

    It was delicious!!

Thank you so much for sharing your ideas, I've bookmarked your blog for future reference.

  19. OMG!!!!!!!!!!! this was the best i ever made, i made it for thanks giving, and it almost has a smoky flavor to it, i could not find the smoke cheese, but it seemed to be a bit bitter was it because of the parika?

  20. Where can I buy smoked cheddar?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I made this recipe last night. It was so easy and tasted great. I plan to add this recipe to my repertoire but will use extra sharp cheese and add a few sprinkles of salt to the cheese mixture.

    Yummy yummy! Thanks.

  25. i made this mac-n-cheese a few nights ago. i couldn't find smoked cheddar anywhere in my neighborhood, so i substituted smoked gouda. it was very good! my husband loved it! its tastes very similar to my mother's mac-n-cheese! i don't like mine real creamy, i prefer it more "stretchy" and firm, so i cut WAY down on the velveeta (i only used about 2 oz.) as i said, it was great... but i think i'll use the amount of velveeta that the recipe calls for next time just to see what i think of it.

thank you for this recipe! i love your site!!!

p.s. this is just a small thing, but i really like the appearence of it after adding paprika and pepper to the top. i usually don't add anything on top, but this way looked much more appetizing! yum!

  28. Do you have a recipe for lasagna or chicken tetrazini or spinach casserole...well all of these are casseroles i guess...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Can I use all shredded cheddar instead? (Im not sure if we would like a smoky flavored cheese or a ton of different flavors of cheese)

Also, what do u mean by Velveeta shredded? Is that the block of cheese but you would have to shred it yourself? Or can you use any brand shredded cheese?

  30. OMG!!! This turned out absolutely wonderful!

Glad I found your site. Going to write a blog review about it on my blog for busy moms.

  31. Great recipe!! I added a couple of things to it to fit my taste...1/3 cup sour cream, a dash of hot sauce, and a dash of nutmeg. I know that sounds funny, but it works :) Thanks for sharing.

  33. I LOVE this recipe, but I've done a few of tweaks since I first found it. I still use the smoked cheddar though because nothing compares to the flavor you get from it. I took out the eggs and paprika and opted for a cheese sauce instead. Oh, and I use garlic salt... so good. Thanks to you and your sister for sharing.
